AI Overviews Cut the #1 Google Result's Clicks by 61%. Is Your Site Still Getting Found?
When a Google AI Overview appears, the number one organic result loses about 61% of its clicks. The most valuable piece of real estate on the internet, the top spot on Google, just lost roughly two-thirds of its clicks in about a year. That figure comes from Seer Interactive, one of the most trusted voices in the SEO industry, and it is happening because of one thing: Google's AI Overviews.
What an AI Overview does to your traffic
When someone searches on Google now, the top of the page often shows an AI Overview, a box that answers the question directly. The person reads it, gets the information they wanted, and never clicks the blue links underneath. So they never reach your website.
The click-through rate on the top organic result fell by about 61% for searches where an AI Overview appears. Paid ads got hit even harder, dropping around 68%. And it is not just click-through rate: when an AI Overview shows up, about 80% of searches end in zero clicks. Eight out of ten searches finish without a single click on any website.
US organic search traffic overall is down 2.5% year over year as of January 2026, according to Search Engine Land. For publishers it is far worse, with Google referral traffic down 38% year over year.
Who is getting hit the hardest
HubSpot, the company that invented the term inbound marketing, lost between 70% and 80% of its organic traffic. CNN lost between 27% and 38%. These are big publishers with full SEO teams and millions in content budgets, and they got crushed. If it is happening to them, picture what is happening to a small business website that has not been touched in five years.
Most agency portfolios are showing 30% to 70% traffic declines on informational content between late 2024 and early 2026. The pattern looks the same everywhere: impressions in Google Search Console look fine, sometimes even higher than before, but the clicks are gone. People see the listing, read the AI summary above it, take what they need, and leave. A page that used to bring in 5,000 visitors a month now brings in 1,500. Most businesses have no idea it is even happening. They are not tracking it. The leads slowly dry up, and they blame the market, the economy, or the cost of Facebook ads.
The lifeline hiding in the data
AI search does throw some businesses a lifeline. Brands that get cited inside AI Overviews earn about 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks than before. Getting cited is now gold. The problem is that most small business websites are nowhere near the kind of content AI search wants to cite.
If you are a small business owner, your website is the foundation of everything else. You can run all the ads you want, post on social all day, and send every email in the world, but if AI search ignores your website and Google traffic keeps shrinking, the whole thing leaks.
Know where you actually stand
Before you touch anything, you need to know where you stand right now. That is why I built AI Spartan, a free tool. Give it your website address and one sentence about what you sell, and it does the rest. It comes up with about 10 real buying questions your customers are asking, you approve them, and it pulls up to 70 live answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, and Google AI Overviews. The report shows how often you come up, who the AI sends your customers to instead, the exact answers word for word, and the three fixes that matter most for your case. The audit is on me, the report is yours to keep.
You are not left alone with a report, either. If you want it all handled, my team does the full implementation: we rebuild your website the way AI search needs it, with schema markup, direct answers, and FAQ blocks, and we get you onto the directories and sources AI trusts most, plus a monthly report showing your AI visibility climbing. Setup fees are waived for the first couple of clients. Run your audit, see where you stand, and book a call from the same page if you want it fixed for you.
