ChatGPT Now Links Buyers Straight to Business Websites (Is Yours One of Them?)
On May 7th, ChatGPT quietly changed one small thing about how it answers questions, and the effect was instant: referral traffic to business websites jumped about 157% in a single week. For the last couple of years, everyone complained that AI just answers the question and never sends anyone to a website. That era is ending, because ChatGPT started handing buyers a clickable link straight to the business it recommends. Right now it is deciding whose link that is.
What actually happened
Before May, if you asked ChatGPT for the best plumber in your city or a good accountant for a small business, it named a few companies in plain text. You still had to copy that name, open Google, and search for them yourself. Most people never bothered. So even if ChatGPT loved your business, the recommendation mostly sat there doing nothing.
Then on May 7th, OpenAI flipped the switch. ChatGPT started turning those business names into real clickable links that go straight to the company's website. Before the change, only about 5% of ChatGPT answers had a link in them. Right after, it jumped to more than 20%. Roughly five times as many answers now come with a door the customer can walk through. And according to Similarweb, visits landing directly on business homepages from ChatGPT shot up around 350% almost overnight.
Why this matters so much for business owners
ChatGPT now has around 900 million people using it every week, asking close to two billion questions a day, and a huge slice of those are buying questions: who is the best roofer near me, which software should I actually use. Until this change, winning that recommendation was a nice little ego boost. Now it is a customer standing on your doorstep with their wallet already out.
The quality of that traffic is remarkable. When someone clicks through from ChatGPT, they were already told you are the right choice, so they arrive sold. That traffic turns into paying customers at roughly five times the rate of a normal Google click. One good placement inside ChatGPT can quietly outperform months of the old SEO grind.
The catch nobody tells you about
ChatGPT does not show 10 options with a scroll bar. It usually names two or three businesses, links to them, and that is the whole list. There is no page two in a chat answer. So this update either just opened a brand-new stream of warm customers for you, or it is quietly handing that stream to the competitors sitting in the spots where your name should be.
And notice what that link actually points to: your website. The AI is sending ready-to-buy people straight to your site, which means your website now has to do two jobs at once. It has to be the kind of site the AI trusts enough to recommend in the first place, and it has to convert that visitor the second they land. Most small business sites were built years ago for a completely different internet. Your website is the foundation this whole thing rests on, and it is the first thing you have to get right.
You cannot fix what you cannot see
Here is the challenge: almost no business owner actually knows what the AI is saying about them. That is the whole reason I built a free tool called AI Spartan.
It reads your website and figures out the real questions your buyers are typing into the AI platforms, then asks those questions across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI, and Google AI Overviews and comes back with up to 70 live answers. Why so many? Because asking once is basically a coin flip, and you want to see the real patterns the AI follows. Then it hands you a report with your visibility score, the exact competitors getting recommended instead of you, the answers word for word, and three fast things you can fix on your site. The audit is free and stays private.
From there you have two options. Take the report and fix things yourself if you have the technical skills, or have my team do the full rebuild. We rebuild your website so the AI can actually read it and wants to recommend it: fast, with schema markup, FAQ blocks, and direct answers at the top, the things AI engines really like. We also get you listed on the trusted sources AI engines pull their citations and recommendations from, then send you proof every month that your AI visibility is climbing.
So here is what I would do today. Run the free AI search audit on your website and see exactly where you stand. On that same page, you can book a call with me to talk about rebuilding your site for this new world where the AI itself is the one sending you customers.
